Life Story

Chopin was born in 1810 in Żelazowa Wola, a village near Warsaw in Poland. His father was a French-born teacher of French, and his mother was Polish. He showed a gift for the piano very early, and at seven his first piece, a Polonaise in G minor, was published. As a child prodigy he played in the homes of nobles, and later he studied composition with Józef Elsner at the music school in Warsaw.

In 1830, at twenty, Chopin left Poland on a concert tour. Soon afterward the November Uprising against Russian rule broke out at home, and he never returned to his homeland. From 1831 he lived in Paris, playing in elegant salons and earning a living by teaching the piano. He disliked big concert halls, and it is said that he gave only about thirty public concerts in his whole life.

In Paris, Chopin became friends with leading artists such as Liszt and Berlioz. From 1838 he was close to the writer George Sand. They spent a winter on the island of Majorca, and many summers at her country house in Nohant, in central France. During these years he wrote masterpieces such as the 24 Preludes, the Heroic Polonaise and his Second and Third Piano Sonatas. The couple parted in 1847.

Chopin had poor health from his youth and suffered from a lung disease, thought to be tuberculosis. In 1848 he toured Britain and even played for Queen Victoria, but his strength kept fading. He died in Paris in 1849 at the age of 39. His body was buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, while his heart was carried by his sister to Warsaw and placed in the Holy Cross Church.

In 1831, the young Robert Schumann reviewed Chopin's Variations on a theme from Don Giovanni in a music newspaper, when Chopin was still unknown. He wrote, 'Hats off, gentlemen, a genius!' It became one of the most famous reviews in music history and helped make Chopin better known.

In English this piece is called the Minute Waltz, but 'minute' here means 'tiny', not 'sixty seconds'. It is said that the music was inspired by George Sand's little dog chasing its own tail round and round.

In an old monastery on Majorca, Chopin composed alone on rainy nights. George Sand later wrote that the sound of rain falling on the roof seemed to flow into his music. But she did not say which prelude it was. On the other hand, some research says that Chopin himself later wrote a word about rain on a pupil's copy of Prelude No. 15.

Chopin's heart was sealed in a jar of liquid, thought to be a kind of strong spirit, and his sister took it to Warsaw. During the Second World War it was removed from the church and returned after the war. In 2014 it was quietly examined, and scientists reported that he most likely died of complications from tuberculosis.

George Sand was a woman writer who used a man's pen name and was known for sometimes walking around Paris in men's clothes. That was a very free way of living for the time. It is said that when Chopin first met her, he was not very impressed.

At Chopin's own wish, Mozart's Requiem was performed at his funeral in the Church of the Madeleine in Paris. Chopin deeply admired Mozart. A large crowd came to say goodbye.
