The Story

This is the first piece in Op. 62, a set of two nocturnes. Op. 62 became the last set of nocturnes Chopin published in his lifetime. After two opening chords, the piece begins with a sweet, gentle melody in B major. In English-speaking countries, it is sometimes nicknamed Tuberose, after a strongly scented greenhouse flower.

The middle part moves to A-flat major and becomes slightly uneasy, with left-hand chords coming in off the beat. Then, when the first melody returns, Chopin uses an amazing idea. Most of the melody notes are written as trills, ornaments that repeat two notes very quickly, so the whole song sounds like trembling light.

This return of the song with added ornaments is often compared to Italian opera arias, where singers freely decorated the repeated part. Op. 62 was published in 1846 and dedicated to Mademoiselle R. de Könneritz, one of Chopin's pupils. At this time, Chopin's health was poor, and in 1847 he would part from George Sand.

This is one of the last nocturnes by Chopin. The melody is sweet and soft. When the melody comes back, it is full of trills. A trill is two notes played very fast again and again. The music shines and shakes like light.

In English-speaking countries, this piece is sometimes called Tuberose. The tuberose is a flower with a strong, sweet scent. Chopin did not give it this name; it is a later nickname.

When the first melody returns, many of its notes are written as trills. Instead of simply holding one note, the pianist shakes it quickly with the next note, so the whole song seems to tremble like light. A piano note fades over time, but a trill can keep the sound going.

The two pieces of Op. 62 are the last nocturnes Chopin published while he was alive. He died in 1849 at the age of 39. Compared with his showy early nocturnes, this piece is more complex and has a deeper, more inward expression.

It is said that when Chopin taught piano, he had pupils start not with C major, which uses only white keys, but with scales such as B major. In B major, the long fingers rest naturally on the black keys and the short thumb on the white keys, so the hand is relaxed. This piece is also in B major.
