ヴァイオリン

オーケストラでいちばん人数が多い楽器。高い音でメロディーを歌います。
The orchestra has more violins than any other instrument. They often sing the melody.
fiddle（くだけた言い方で「ヴァイオリン」）。play second fiddle は「わき役にまわる」。

人の声にいちばん近いと言われる、深く温かい音の楽器。いすにすわってひざの間にはさんで弾きます。
People say the cello sounds like a human voice. Players sit and hold it between their knees.
英語の発音は「チェロウ」。複数形は cellos。
コントラバス
double bass
弦楽器でいちばん大きく、いちばん低い音。オーケストラの土台をささえます。
The biggest and lowest string instrument. It supports the whole orchestra.
double bass / string bass / upright bass などいろいろな呼び方があります。
ハープ
harp
47本の弦と7本のペダルを持つ、きらきらした音の楽器。
A concert harp has 47 strings and 7 pedals. Its sound sparkles.
harp on は「同じことをくどくど言う」という熟語。
ギター
classical guitar
ナイロン弦のクラシックギター。スペインの名曲で大活躍。
The classical guitar uses nylon strings. It shines in Spanish music.
WOODWINDS
木管楽器
フルート
flute
金属でできていても「木管楽器」。横にかまえて息を吹きこみます。
It is made of metal, but it is a woodwind. You hold it sideways.
オーボエ

オーケストラのチューニング（音合わせ）は、オーボエの「ラ」から始まります。
The orchestra tunes to the oboe's A.
クラリネット
clarinet
やわらかい低音から明るい高音まで。モーツァルトが愛した楽器。
From soft low notes to bright high notes. Mozart loved it.
ファゴット
bassoon
長い管を折りたたんだ低音の木管楽器。ユーモラスな役もお手のもの。
A low woodwind with a long folded tube. It is great at funny parts.
日本語はイタリア語・ドイツ語から「ファゴット」、英語は bassoon。

輝かしいファンファーレの主役。
The star of bright fanfares.
blow your own trumpet は「自慢する」。
ホルン
French horn
ぐるぐる巻いた管は、のばすと約3.7メートル（F管）。
Its coiled tube is about 3.7 meters long when stretched out (in F).
英語では French horn または horn。
トロンボーン

スライドをのばして音の高さを変える金管楽器。
You move the slide to change the pitch.
テューバ

金管楽器でいちばん低い音。
The lowest brass instrument.

音の高さを変えられる大きな太鼓。
Large drums that can play different pitches.
単数形は timpano（ふつうは複数形で使う）。
トライアングル

小さいけれど、オーケストラ全体をつきぬけて聞こえる音。
Small, but you can hear it over the whole orchestra.
KEYBOARDS
鍵盤楽器
ピアノ
piano
正式名は「ピアノフォルテ」。弱い音（piano）も強い音（forte）も出せるから。
Its full name is pianoforte, because it can play soft (piano) and loud (forte).
チェンバロ
harpsichord
ピアノの前に大人気だった鍵盤楽器。弦をつめではじいて鳴らします。
The keyboard before the piano. It plucks the strings.
日本ではドイツ語のチェンバロ、英語では harpsichord。
パイプオルガン
pipe organ
何千本ものパイプを持つ「楽器の王様」。
With thousands of pipes, it is called the king of instruments.
pull out all the stops（全力を出す）は、オルガンの音栓（stop）を全部引く様子から。
