Where the 'Mozart effect' began
(Nature)
Thirty-six college students listened to 10 minutes of Mozart, a relaxation tape, or silence, and then did spatial reasoning tasks such as paper folding and cutting. After Mozart, scores converted to a spatial IQ scale were about 8 points higher than after relaxation and 9 points higher than after silence. But the authors said the effect did not last beyond the 10 to 15 minutes of each test. The study showed a short-term boost on one kind of test, not a lasting rise in intelligence.
Students listened to Mozart for 10 minutes. Then they did a puzzle test. Their scores were a little better. But after 15 minutes, the good effect was gone.

This one-page letter grew into the popular idea that 'Mozart makes you smarter', and many CDs and books were sold. The authors never claimed a lasting rise in IQ. Many later attempts to repeat the result failed (see the next item).
Listening to music you enjoy just before a test may lift your mood. But don't expect music alone to make you smarter.

Chabris combined 16 studies in a meta-analysis and found the effect was tiny, about one or two IQ points, and limited to a paper-folding task. Steele's team repeated the procedure and found no effect. Pietschnig's team pooled about 40 studies with roughly 3,000 people and found only a tiny difference between Mozart and other music. They also found signs that positive results were more likely to be published, and that the largest effects came from the original research group's labs.
Many scientists tried the test again. Most of them found almost no effect. Mozart was not special. Other music worked the same.

Today most researchers say there is no special Mozart effect. However, music clearly can change mood and energy, which explains small short-term effects (see the next item).

The arousal-and-mood explanation: it is the mood, not Mozart
Spatial scores improved a little after the cheerful Mozart piece, but not after the slow, sad Albinoni. When the researchers took changes in arousal and mood into account, the difference disappeared. In a 1999 study, people who preferred a Stephen King story did just as well after hearing the story. These results suggest that enjoyment, arousal and mood, not anything special about Mozart, may explain the small, short-term changes in scores.
Happy, fast music made people feel good and awake. Then they did a little better on tests. A fun story worked too. The key is your mood.

Eighteen non-musicians listened to Boyce symphonies in an MRI scanner. Around the short silences between movements, two brain networks responded one after the other: first a network linked to noticing important events, then a network linked to attention and updating memory. The brain seems to divide music into events. The researchers chose little-known music so that familiarity would not affect the results.

2001)(Nature Neuroscience)
Using PET scans, the team found dopamine release in the brain's reward system (the striatum) while people listened to music that gave them intense pleasure. Using fMRI with the same listeners, they found that the caudate was more active during anticipation, while the nucleus accumbens was more active at the emotional peak. Music, which is abstract, uses reward circuits similar to those for food.
In this small study, people who often get chills from music released dopamine in the brain while listening. One brain area was busy before the best part, and another was busy during it.

研究者:ジョン・ヒューズら(1998)、マルジャン・ラフィーら(2020)、ロバート・クオンら(2021)(Scientific Reports(ほか Clinical Electroencephalography、Epilepsia Open))
In 1998, Hughes reported that epileptic brain-wave activity often decreased while patients listened to K.448. A 2020 Toronto trial found that six minutes a day of K.448 for three months reduced seizures compared with a scrambled control sound. In 2021, a Dartmouth team recorded from electrodes in the brains of 16 patients and found fewer epileptic discharges after at least 30 seconds of K.448; other music did not have a clear effect.
Some doctors played Mozart to people with epilepsy. Some studies found fewer unusual brain signals. But other scientists say the proof is still weak.

A 2020 meta-analysis of 12 studies reported fewer seizures and fewer epileptic discharges between seizures. However, a 2023 University of Vienna meta-analysis concluded that the evidence for a special effect of K.448 is weak, because the studies were small and often poorly reported. Music is not a replacement for medical treatment and should be discussed with a doctor.

In 1989, music with singing disrupted memory for number lists more than instrumental music. In 2014, reading comprehension was worse with lyrical music, whether liked or disliked, than in quiet; instrumental music was not clearly worse than quiet. A 2011 meta-analysis of many studies found almost no overall effect of background music, but a small negative effect on reading and memory and a positive effect on mood and sports.
Songs with words can make reading and remembering harder. Music without words may bother you less, but it can still get in the way. Quiet is often best for hard reading.
