The Story

Brahms's Lullaby is a German song for voice and piano. It is No. 4 of his Five Songs, Op. 49. Its gentle, rocking melody, which says "Good evening, good night," is often heard in music boxes and baby toys. It may be the best-known lullaby in the world.

Brahms wrote this song in 1868 to celebrate the birth of the second son of his friend Bertha Faber. Years before, Bertha had sung in a women's choir that Brahms led in Hamburg. In the piano part, Brahms secretly hid the tune of a Viennese song that Bertha used to sing to him.

The words of the first verse come from a German collection of folk poems called Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy's Magic Horn). The song was first performed in public in Vienna in December 1869, and Clara Schumann is said to have played the piano. Since then it has been arranged countless times, and people everywhere hum it without knowing the words.

This is a song for a baby at night. The music rocks gently, like a cradle. The composer wrote it for a friend's new baby boy. You can hear it in many music boxes and baby toys.

The piano part secretly uses the melody of a popular Viennese song that Bertha used to sing to Brahms when she was young. It was like a secret greeting meant for Bertha, who would surely recognize it. It shows how personal this gift was.

Brahms wrote one of the world's best-known lullabies, but he never married and had no children of his own. Even so, he loved his friends' children, and he also made a collection of folk song arrangements for children.

When the song was first published, it had only one verse, taken from the folk poem collection. The second verse that people often sing today was added later, using a poem by another writer, Georg Scherer.

In English-speaking countries, the song is simply called "Brahms's Lullaby," and several sets of English words have been written for it. It is so famous that the composer's name has become the name of the song.
