Many people know 'Pachelbel's Canon' from weddings. But its full title is 'Canon and Gigue for three violins and basso continuo,' and after the canon comes a short piece called a gigue. A gigue is a fast, hopping dance that grew out of the jig of Britain and Ireland. It is a lively ending, the opposite of the calm canon.
Pachelbel was an organist and composer from Nuremberg in Germany. This gigue also uses imitation: one instrument starts a short melody, and the others follow with the same melody a little later. But unlike the canon, it has no repeating bass line or fixed pattern of chords. Its two halves are exactly ten bars each, so it is very short and tight.
Nobody knows when this music was written. The only surviving source is a 19th-century copy in a library in Berlin. In 1919, the scholar Gustav Beckmann published the canon in an article, but without the gigue. The gigue was finally published with it in 1929. Even after the canon became a huge hit, helped by Jean-François Paillard's 1968 recording, the gigue has often been treated as a little extra.
You may know Pachelbel's Canon. It is slow and beautiful. But after the Canon, there is another short piece! It is a fast dance called a gigue. It is happy and bouncy, and it lasts only about one minute.

When the scholar Gustav Beckmann introduced this music in 1919, only the canon was published. The gigue was printed with it ten years later, in 1929, in an edition by Max Seiffert. From the very start of its modern life, the gigue was the little brother that came along later.
No score in Pachelbel's own hand survives. The only source we have is a 19th-century copy in the Berlin State Library. There was once a second copy at another school in Berlin, but it is now lost. So this world-famous Canon and Gigue survived thanks to just one copy.
In the Baroque era, composers often wrote suites, sets of dance pieces, and a lively gigue was the classic way to end them. All six of Bach's cello suites end with a gigue. In the same spirit, Pachelbel placed a cheerful gigue after his gentle canon.
In the canon, three violins play exactly the same melody one after another, while the bass repeats the same eight notes again and again. The gigue has no repeating bass. Instead, all the players imitate a short melody, closer to the style of a fugue. Both are games of imitation, but with different rules.
