The Story

Te Deum is an old Latin hymn of thanks. Its first words mean 'We praise you, O God.' In the past, it was sung in church for happy events, such as a victory in war or a royal celebration. The French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier set it for choir, solo singers and orchestra. The most famous part is the opening prelude, with its bright trumpets and timpani.

Charpentier probably wrote it between 1688 and 1698, while he was director of music at the Jesuit church of Saint-Louis in Paris. At that time, Lully held tight control over opera at the court of Louis XIV, so Charpentier worked mainly for churches and noble patrons. He described D major as 'bright and very warlike.'

After Charpentier's death, the piece was forgotten for a long time. In 1953, the French musicologist Carl de Nys rediscovered the score, and it began to be performed again. Then in 1954, the European Broadcasting Union chose the prelude as the theme music for its Eurovision broadcasts. Huge audiences across Europe still hear it today, for example at the Eurovision Song Contest.

This is a song to thank God. It starts with loud trumpets and drums. People in Europe know the first part very well because it is the theme music for a big TV show, the Eurovision Song Contest! But for more than 200 years, almost nobody played it.

Listening Guide

Listen for the timpani at the very start. Then the trumpets begin the proud melody.
The prelude is a rondeau: the main tune keeps coming back, with other music in between. Try counting how many times you hear it.
After the prelude, the choir and soloists come in. Enjoy the bright voices praising God in Latin.

Since 1954, the prelude has been played at the start of Eurovision broadcasts, so many Europeans know it as 'TV music.' Because it is heard at the yearly Eurovision Song Contest, many people hum it without knowing it is church music. A 17th-century hymn of thanks became the face of 20th-century television.

In his writings on composition, Charpentier described the 'character' of different keys. He called D major 'bright and very warlike.' The natural trumpets of his time were especially effective in D, so this key was often used for music of victory and celebration. The brightness of this piece has a good reason behind it.

During his life, Charpentier never became the leading composer at court, and most of his works stayed unpublished in handwritten scores. In 1953, the musicologist Carl de Nys found this Te Deum, and the next year it became a TV theme across Europe. It was a big comeback, about 250 years after his death.

Charpentier is thought to have written six Te Deums, but only four survive. This one, with trumpets and timpani, is by far the most often performed. Some say it was written to celebrate a military victory, but nobody knows for sure.
