Partita No. 3 in E major is the last of Bach's six works for solo violin, three sonatas and three partitas. Its first movement, the Preludio, is a stream of quick notes with almost no rests, and the bright sound of E major sparkles all around. Bach's clean copy is dated 1720.
A partita is a suite, a set of dance pieces. In Partita No. 3, the Preludio is followed by a Loure, a Gavotte en Rondeau, Minuets, a Bourrée and a Gigue. In the Preludio, the player switches quickly between an open string, played without pressing a finger down, and stopped notes. This creates a strange, echo-like sound that hardly seems to come from one instrument.
Perhaps Bach was especially fond of this Preludio. Later in Leipzig, he turned it into the opening Sinfonia of Cantata No. 29 (1731). There, the organ plays the solo part, and trumpets and timpani join in to make it grand. In the 20th century, Rachmaninoff arranged three movements of this partita, including the Preludio, for piano.
This is a bright and happy piece for one violin. The notes run very fast. They almost never stop. Bach later used this music again in a big piece with an organ and trumpets.

Cantata No. 29, 'We thank you, God', was written for the church service that celebrated the start of Leipzig's new town council. The solo violin Preludio was reborn as grand festive music with organ, three trumpets and timpani. Bach also changed the key from E major to D major.
Partita No. 3 has another version, called BWV 1006a. The score does not clearly say which instrument it is for, but it may be for the lute, a string instrument related to the guitar, or for a harpsichord that sounds like a lute. Today, guitarists often play it, too.
In 1933, the Russian pianist and composer Rachmaninoff arranged three movements from this partita for piano: the Preludio, the Gavotte and the Gigue. He added bass notes and chords to the solo violin music and made it brilliant piano music. It is one of the works of his later years.
Bach's solo violin works were first published in 1802, more than 50 years after his death. In the 19th century, they were sometimes played with a piano accompaniment, and both Mendelssohn and Schumann wrote such parts. Playing them on the violin alone became the normal way only later.
