Toccata and Fugue in D minor is a piece for pipe organ. The first part, the toccata, is free and showy, like an improvisation with fingers racing across the keys. The second part, the fugue, is built from one melody that enters again and again in high and low voices, as if they are chasing each other. It is often thought that Bach wrote it as a young man, around 1704, but nobody knows the exact year.
In fact, no score in Bach's own hand survives. The oldest copy was written out by someone else. Because of this, scholars question not only when it was written but also whether Bach wrote it at all. In 1981, the scholar Peter Williams published an article suggesting that it might not be by Bach, and some have even argued that it was first a piece for violin.
The piece was first published in 1833, more than 80 years after Bach's death. In the 20th century, the conductor Leopold Stokowski arranged it for orchestra, and his version opened Disney's 1940 film Fantasia, which made it famous around the world. Today there are rock and techno versions too, and in Japan many people know the opening from Tatsuo Kamon's comic song 'Hana kara Gyunyu'.
This is a famous piece for the pipe organ. It starts with a very loud and dark sound. Many people think of scary movies when they hear it. But here is a surprise: maybe Bach did not write it! Some experts think another person wrote it.
No autograph survives, and some experts say the harmony and the fugue do not sound like Bach's other organ works. So there is a theory that someone else wrote it. Many scholars still believe it is an early work by Bach, and the question has not been settled.
Because it is often used in horror films and haunted houses, many people now link this piece, and the pipe organ, with a spooky sound. But the organ is really an instrument of churches and concert halls, and this piece was probably written to show off its power and brilliance.
In the 1940 film Fantasia, Stokowski's orchestral version is shown with animation of colors and shapes, without any story. It is the very first piece in the film, and we also see the shadows of the conductor and orchestra. It was a very new idea at the time to mix classical music and animation.
In the fugue, there is a style of writing often used for the violin, where one note is played again and again to sound like a chord. So some people think it was first a piece for solo violin, and 'reconstructed' violin versions have been recorded. In the 1990s, Vanessa-Mae's techno-style violin version also became popular.
