The Story

The 'Little' Fugue in G minor is a fugue for pipe organ. Bach probably wrote it as a young man, in the early 1700s, though the exact year is not known. First, a melody called the subject appears in the highest voice. Then the alto, tenor and bass voices enter one after another with the same subject, until four voices are woven together.

A fugue is music in which several voices chase the same subject and overlap. This subject starts slowly and then flows into quicker notes, so it is easy to sing. The last entry, in the bass, is played by the organist's feet on the pedal keyboard. The nickname 'Little' is used to tell it apart from a larger fugue in the same key, G minor (BWV 542).

In Japan, it has appeared in school textbooks for many years as a piece that junior high school students listen to in music class. It is perfect for learning how a fugue works and for hearing the sound of a pipe organ. In the 20th century, the conductor Leopold Stokowski arranged it for orchestra, and it is also played by brass groups and many other ensembles.

This is a piece for the pipe organ. One melody starts first. Then a second voice plays the same melody. Then a third and a fourth voice join. Many students in Japan listen to it in music class.

Remember the subject well. At first, it is played alone in a high voice.
The subject enters again in a lower voice, then an even lower one. The fourth time, it comes in the deep pedal notes.
In the second half, the music grows each time the subject returns. Try to find the last entry.

Bach also wrote a large Fantasia and Fugue in the same key, G minor (BWV 542), and its fugue is called the 'Great' Fugue. So this shorter, friendlier piece came to be called the 'Little' Fugue. Neither nickname was given by Bach himself.

The fourth entry of the subject, in the bass, is played with the feet. The pedal keyboard has large wooden keys, and the organist uses toes and heels to play the same melody the hands played. When the low notes begin, the whole church seems to shake.

In 1705, the young Bach made a long journey to Lübeck to hear the famous north German organist Dieterich Buxtehude. It is said that Bach's organ music from these years shows the influence of such north German masters.

The conductor Leopold Stokowski, famous for Disney's Fantasia, arranged many of Bach's organ works for orchestra. This Little Fugue is one of them. He gave the four organ voices to strings, woodwinds and brass, so the different colors make the chase in the fugue easier to hear.
