Dido's Lament' is the aria sung near the end of Dido and Aeneas, an opera by the English composer Henry Purcell. Dido, Queen of Carthage, falls in love with the Trojan prince Aeneas, but he leaves her to continue his journey. Full of sorrow, Dido sings, 'Remember me, but ah! forget my fate,' and says farewell to the world.
The story comes from the Aeneid, an epic poem by the ancient Roman poet Virgil, and the libretto was written by Nahum Tate. Under the aria, a short bass line that falls by half steps is repeated eleven times. This is called a ground bass. A falling line like this was a common sign of grief in music of the time. Above it, Dido's melody moves freely and breaks your heart.
We know the opera was performed by 1689 at a girls' boarding school in Chelsea, near London, but nobody knows exactly when it was written. No score in Purcell's own hand survives, and the oldest copies were made long after his death. Today it is seen as the first great English opera, and the lament is played every November at the Remembrance Sunday ceremony in London.
This is a very sad song from an opera. A queen named Dido loves a prince. But the prince goes away. Dido sings, 'Remember me!' Under her song, the same low melody plays again and again, eleven times!

The earliest known performance was at a girls' boarding school in Chelsea, near London, run by the dancing master Josias Priest. A printed libretto from around 1689 survives. So schoolgirls sang and danced this tragic love story! Some scholars think the opera was first written earlier, for the royal court.
Not a single page in Purcell's hand survives. The scores we use today were copied decades after he died, and some music, such as the prologue found in the libretto, has been lost. So the Dido and Aeneas we hear today is not complete.
Every November in London, a Remembrance Sunday ceremony is held at the Cenotaph in Whitehall to honor those who died in war. Military bands traditionally play this piece there. The words 'Remember me' match people's feelings for those they have lost.
The repeated bass falls by half steps from G down to D. This shape is called the 'chromatic fourth,' and in the Baroque era it was a standard way to express grief. It often appears as an example in music textbooks. Purcell repeats it eleven times while the voice floats freely above it.
