Purcell was born around 1659 in Westminster, London. His exact birthday is not known. Several members of his family were royal musicians, and as a boy he sang in the choir of the Chapel Royal. After his voice changed, he stayed on at court, caring for instruments and learning to compose. While still a teenager, he was chosen as composer for the King's string orchestra.
In 1679, at about twenty, Purcell followed his teacher John Blow as organist of Westminster Abbey. He then wrote songs for royal events, church music, and music for the theater, one after another. His Dido and Aeneas is one of the earliest great operas in English, and "Dido's Lament," sung by the heroine, is still very famous today.
In the 1690s, Purcell became more and more popular in the theater. He created grand stage works that mixed spoken drama and music, such as King Arthur and The Fairy-Queen, and London audiences loved them. When Queen Mary II died at the end of 1694, Purcell wrote music for her funeral the next year. It is solemn and full of deep sorrow.
But in November of that same year, 1695, Purcell himself died at only about 36. The cause is not certain, but one theory is tuberculosis. He was buried in Westminster Abbey, close to the organ. After his death, a collection of his songs was published as Orpheus Britannicus, "the British Orpheus," and he is still seen as one of England's greatest composers.
Purcell was born in London. He sang in the King's choir as a boy. He played the organ at Westminster Abbey. He wrote an opera in English, Dido and Aeneas. He died young, at about 36. People still enjoy his music today.

In spring 1695, Purcell wrote music for the funeral of Queen Mary II. But in November of that year, Purcell himself died. The same music was played at his own funeral. It was a sad twist of history.
The earliest known performance of Dido and Aeneas took place around 1689 at a girls' boarding school in Chelsea, London. The students probably sang in it. Experts still disagree about whether the opera was first written for the school.
The Trumpet Voluntary, a wedding favorite, was thought to be by Purcell for about 70 years from the late 1800s. But the real composer was Jeremiah Clarke, a younger musician. Its proper title is The Prince of Denmark's March.
In 1946, the English composer Benjamin Britten wrote The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra to introduce children to the instruments. For its theme, he chose a tune from Purcell's theater music for Abdelazer. It is still used in music classes today.
There is a story that Purcell came home very late one night, his angry wife locked him out, and he caught a fatal chill. But this story was written down much later, and no one knows if it is true. Another theory is tuberculosis.
Purcell's memorial in Westminster Abbey says that he has gone to "that blessed place where only his harmony can be exceeded." In other words, only heaven has music more beautiful than his.
