Pachelbel was born in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1653. As a boy, he was good at both music and his school subjects, and in 1669, at fifteen, he entered the university in Altdorf. But his family did not have enough money, and he had to leave within a year. He then studied at a school in Regensburg, and around the age of twenty he worked as an assistant organist at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna.
After working at the court in Eisenach, he became a church organist in Erfurt in 1678 and stayed for about twelve years. There he became close to the Bach family. He was godfather to one of Bach's sisters and taught Bach's oldest brother, Johann Christoph. He wrote more than 200 pieces for organ, and in his day he was known as one of the finest organists in Germany.
In 1683, while he was in Erfurt, the plague hit the city, and his first wife and their baby son died. That same year he published a set of variations titled Musical Thoughts on Death. The next year he married again and had seven children. Later, he moved to Stuttgart and then Gotha, partly to escape war, and in 1695 he returned to his hometown of Nuremberg.
Pachelbel spent his last ten years or so as organist of St. Sebaldus Church in Nuremberg, and he died there in March 1706 at the age of 52. After his death, his name slowly faded. But in the 20th century, a 1968 recording by Jean-François Paillard's orchestra made the Canon a huge hit. Today it is played at weddings all over the world.

After Bach lost his parents, his oldest brother, Johann Christoph, taught him the organ. And that brother's teacher was Pachelbel. So Pachelbel's skills were passed on to Bach through his brother.
The Canon is very famous today, but it was not published until 1919. It became a big hit only after a 1968 recording by Jean-François Paillard's orchestra, more than 250 years after the composer died.
In the Canon, the bass plays the same short pattern of eight notes 28 times from start to finish. Above it, three violins play the same melody, each starting a little later, like a game of tag. It is simple, but it never gets boring.
The chord pattern of the Canon sounds so good that it is used in pop songs all over the world. In Japan it is called the "Canon progression," and it is the base of many hit songs. You may be hearing Pachelbel without knowing it.
Pachelbel's son Charles Theodore crossed the ocean in the early 1730s and moved to the American colonies. He worked as an organist in Boston and other towns, and his name appears in the early history of American music.
Pachelbel's children were very talented. His son Wilhelm Hieronymus became an organist and composer, and his daughter Amalia became a painter and engraver at a time when women artists were rare.
