The same eight bass notes, over and over, and still pure magic.

Pachelbel's Canon was written by Johann Pachelbel, a German organist of the 17th century, for three violins and a bass part called basso continuo. Its full title is Canon and Gigue in D major, and the canon is the first of the pair. Nobody knows exactly when it was written; scholars suggest dates between 1680 and 1706.
A canon is a piece in which several parts play the same melody, each starting a little later, like a round. Here the bass plays a short pattern of eight notes again and again. Above it, the three violins play the same tune, each entering two bars after the one before. The bass pattern never changes, and it is usually counted as 28 repetitions.
The piece was forgotten for a long time and was not published until 1919. Its big break came in 1968, when the French conductor Jean-François Paillard and his chamber orchestra recorded a slow, romantic version. Its use in the 1980 film Ordinary People brought it to an even wider audience, especially in the United States. Today it is one of the most popular pieces for weddings.
This music is very old. It is more than 300 years old. Three violins play the same tune, one after another. Under them, the bass plays the same eight notes again and again. Today many people play it at weddings.

Today it is one of the most famous classical pieces in the world. But it was first published only in 1919, and the first recording was made in Berlin in 1938. Before that, Pachelbel was known mainly to experts, as a composer of organ music.
The chord pattern over the bass is often called the 'Canon progression', and parts or variations of it appear in countless pop songs. Green Day's 'Basket Case' and Oasis's 'Don't Look Back in Anger' are often named as songs with very similar chord patterns. Many Japanese pop songs use it too.
In Tatsuro Yamashita's Japanese hit 'Christmas Eve', the instrumental break features a choir part based on Pachelbel's Canon. Yamashita made it by layering his own voice many times. It is surprising that this beautiful winter chorus comes from a melody more than 300 years old.
Pachelbel was the teacher of Johann Christoph Bach, the older brother of the great J. S. Bach. Pachelbel was invited to Johann Christoph's wedding in 1694 and probably attended, so some people think the Canon was written for it. However, there is no proof; it is only one idea.
