The Story

Sheep May Safely Graze' is a soprano aria, a solo song, from Bach's Cantata No. 208. Pales, the goddess of shepherds, sings that sheep can graze safely where a good shepherd watches over them. Two recorders accompany her gently, like a shepherd's pipes.

Bach wrote this cantata in 1713 to celebrate the birthday of Duke Christian of Saxe-Weissenfels. Its title means 'What pleases me is only the merry hunt' — a gift for a duke who loved hunting. In the words, the sheep stand for the people of the land and the shepherd for the ruler who protects them, so the song praises a good ruler.

It was written for a celebration, not for church, but it was later arranged many times for piano, organ, orchestra and more. In the 20th century, the English composer William Walton used it in his ballet The Wise Virgins, and the Australian-born Percy Grainger made a free arrangement of it. Today it is often played at weddings and other events.

This is a song for a soprano singer. It is about sheep in a quiet field. Two recorders sound like a shepherd's pipes. Bach wrote it for a duke's birthday party. The duke loved hunting!

Cantata No. 208 is also called the 'Hunting Cantata.' It was written to celebrate the birthday of Duke Christian, who loved hunting, at a feast after the hunt. It is a little surprising that this peaceful song about sheep was sung at a hunting celebration.

The sheep in the song are not really sheep. They stand for the people of the country, and the shepherd stands for the ruler who protects them. The message is that people can live safely where a good ruler governs. It was a perfect compliment to the duke at his party.

In this cantata, the characters are Diana, goddess of the hunt, her beloved Endymion, Pan, the god of shepherds, and the goddess Pales. Each one sings praise for the duke, so the cantata is like a small play. 'Sheep May Safely Graze' is Pales's song.

Besides church cantatas, Bach also wrote 'secular' cantatas for celebrations and other events. No. 208 is thought to be the earliest of his secular cantatas that survive. It is a fresh work by Bach in his twenties, when he worked in Weimar.
