The Story

Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor is a large work for pipe organ. Bach probably wrote it in his twenties, while he was working in Arnstadt or Weimar. It begins with an eight-bar theme played alone on the pedals, deep and solemn. This theme repeats again and again, while the hands on the keyboards play many different variations above it.

The passacaglia comes from a dance of Spanish origin. In music, it means variations built over a bass line that repeats. In this piece, the theme appears 21 times in all, giving 20 variations. The first half of the theme is known to come from a piece by the French organist André Raison. With each repeat, the music grows richer and more powerful.

When the passacaglia ends, the fugue begins without a break. Its subject uses the first half of the passacaglia theme, combined with new melodies. This work is seen as one of the greatest organ pieces ever written, and in the 20th century, Stokowski and Respighi arranged it for orchestra.

This is a big piece for the pipe organ. First, the organ player plays a low melody with the feet. The melody comes back again and again. Each time, the music on top changes. At the end, there is a fugue.

Listening Guide

At the start, remember the heavy, low theme played on the pedals alone.
Each time the theme repeats, the music above it becomes busier and more lively.
When the passacaglia ends, the fugue begins at once. The first half of the theme comes back as the fugue subject.

The first four bars of the theme are almost the same as a melody in an organ book that the Frenchman André Raison published in 1688. In those days, borrowing someone else's melody to make a new piece was quite normal. Bach added a second half to make an eight-bar theme and grew it into a grand work.

An eight-bar theme played 21 times makes 168 bars in the passacaglia alone. The variations come in groups. The notes get quicker, and at times the theme moves from the feet up into the higher voices played by the hands. It is often compared to a carefully designed cathedral.

Keeping the long theme steady on the pedals while playing complicated variations with both hands is a real challenge for organists. That is why this piece is treated as one of the most important works in organ concerts.

In 1930, the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, famous for The Pines of Rome, arranged this piece for orchestra. He turned the organ's deep pedal notes into low strings and brass, and painted the variations in many different colors. It has a power quite different from the organ version.
