The Chaconne is the last movement of Bach's Partita No. 2 in D minor for solo violin. It is played by one violin alone, with no accompaniment, and it is about as long as the other four movements put together. Bach's own clean copy of his six sonatas and partitas for solo violin is dated 1720.
The chaconne began as a dance in triple time, popular in Spain and elsewhere. In music, it means a set of variations over a short pattern of bass notes or chords that repeats again and again. Starting from a short theme, Bach links together dozens of variations. In the middle, the music turns to bright D major, then returns to dark D minor. Playing chords and several melodies at once on one instrument takes great skill.
Later musicians were captivated by this piece. Brahms made a version for piano left hand alone, and Busoni wrote a grand version for piano with both hands. The great guitarist Andrés Segovia arranged it for guitar, too. For violinists today, it is like a mountain peak they hope to reach, and it often holds a special place in concert programs.
This is a long piece for one violin. There is no piano and no orchestra. But it sounds very big and deep. A short theme comes back again and again in new forms. Some people say it is the greatest violin piece ever.

In 2007, as an experiment by The Washington Post, the star violinist Joshua Bell secretly played in a subway station during the morning rush. His first piece was this Chaconne. In about 45 minutes, more than 1,000 people passed by, but only about seven stopped to listen. Gene Weingarten, who wrote the article, won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing for it.
In 1720, while Bach was away traveling with his employer, his first wife, Maria Barbara, died suddenly. It is said that she had already been buried when he came home. Some people believe the Chaconne is music in her memory, and one scholar even claims to find hidden hymn melodies in it. However, there is no clear proof.
In an 1877 letter to Clara Schumann, Brahms wrote that on a single staff, for a small instrument, Bach had written a whole world of the deepest thoughts and strongest feelings. He added that if he imagined he had written it himself, the excitement would have driven him mad. He sent Clara his version for piano left hand.
A violin can usually play only one or two notes at a time. Even so, Bach writes chords of three or four notes, which the player plays by sweeping the bow quickly across the strings. He also makes the line jump between high and low notes so that it sounds like several people singing at once.
