Abdelazer is music that Purcell wrote for a play. About ten short pieces were played before the play and between the scenes. The second one is this Rondeau. Its melody, in D minor, sounds a little sad but moves forward with energy, and once you hear it, you won't forget it. It is a short, tight piece for strings.
The play was a tragedy by Aphra Behn, who is known as one of the first English women to earn a living by writing. It was first staged in 1676, and when it was revived in 1695, Purcell wrote new music for it. A rondeau is a piece in which the main tune keeps coming back, with different music in between.
Purcell died in November of that year, at only 36. About 250 years later, in 1946, the British composer Benjamin Britten used this tune as the theme of The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. In that piece, the theme is passed from instrument to instrument, so listeners can learn how an orchestra works. Thanks to Britten's piece, Purcell's tune is now very widely known.
This is music for a play. It is short, but the melody is very strong. Many years later, another English composer used it. He made a piece to teach children about the orchestra. Each instrument gets a turn with this melody!

Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra was first written for an educational film. The whole orchestra plays the theme first, and then the woodwinds, brass, strings and percussion each take a turn. At the end comes a fugue, and Purcell's theme returns in all its glory.
Aphra Behn, who wrote the play, is known as one of the first English women to make a living by writing. The 20th-century writer Virginia Woolf even wrote that all women should let flowers fall on Behn's tomb. She was a pioneer in a time when few women earned money with their pens.
This melody has also reached the cinema. In the 2005 film Pride & Prejudice, the Rondeau is heard as dance music at the Netherfield ball. In the film Moonrise Kingdom (2012), Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, which uses Purcell's theme, comes back again and again.
1695 was the year Purcell died, yet he was still writing music for many plays. He was a composer in great demand in London's theaters. The cause of his death is not clear, but he was only 36. He lies in Westminster Abbey, next to the organ.
