The Toccata in D major is a piece for harpsichord or another keyboard instrument. The word 'toccata' comes from the Italian 'toccare', meaning 'to touch', and it is the name for a free, showy piece that shows off quick fingers. As a young man, Bach wrote seven toccatas (BWV 910–916). This is one of them, and it was probably written by about 1710.
The piece is made of several sections, and fast and slow parts take turns. It opens with a brilliant rush up the keyboard, followed by a lively Allegro and then a sad Adagio. One section is even marked 'con discrezione', which tells the player to take it freely. You can hear the influence of the free, improvised style of north German organists such as Buxtehude.
It ends with a fugue in a bouncing rhythm, bright and full of energy. An early version (BWV 912a) was copied into the Möller Manuscript, a music collection made by Bach's older brother Johann Christoph. The later version comes down to us only in copies made after Bach's death, and they differ in small details. In the 20th century, the pianist Glenn Gould recorded all seven toccatas. Today they are played on both the harpsichord and the modern piano.
This is a fast and bright piece for the keyboard. Bach wrote it when he was young. It has many parts. Some parts are fast, and some parts are slow. An old copy of the music is in a book made by Bach's big brother.

Bach lost both his parents by the age of ten and went to live with his older brother Johann Christoph in Ohrdruf. An early version of this toccata was copied into the Möller Manuscript, a music collection made by that brother. Thanks to this manuscript, we can still study an early version of the young Bach's work.
トッカータは、イタリア語の動詞 toccare(さわる、ふれる)から来ています。
'Toccata' comes from the Italian verb 'toccare', meaning 'to touch'. It was a word for a free, improvised-sounding piece in which the player touches the keys and shows off finger skills. That is why a toccata does not follow a fixed form and can change freely, running and stopping as it likes.
In the score, the tempo marks keep changing: Presto, Allegro, Adagio and more. The piece falls into about seven parts. Within one piece, the music runs, stops and thinks deeply. It is like the diary of a young person whose mood keeps changing.
No finished score in Bach's own hand survives. The later version comes to us through several copies made after his death, and each copy is a little different. Editors and players have to decide which copy to trust.
