The Cello Suites are six suites for cello alone, with no accompaniment, and No. 1 is the first. After the Prelude come the Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Minuets and Gigue, which were dances of the time. The opening Prelude, with its broken chords rolling like waves, is especially famous.
It was probably written around 1720, when Bach worked at the court of Köthen. Prince Leopold of Köthen loved music, and his court had excellent players. However, no score in Bach's own hand survives. The music has come down to us through copies, such as one made by his second wife, Anna Magdalena.
For a long time, the suites were seen as exercises and were rarely played in concerts. The Spanish cellist Pablo Casals changed that. At 13 he found an old copy in a music shop in Barcelona. He practiced it for more than ten years before playing it in public, and later he recorded all six suites. Today they are among the most important works for any cellist.
This piece is for one cello. There is no piano and no orchestra. The first part has flowing notes like waves. A boy found the old music in a shop in Barcelona. He grew up to be a great cellist and made it famous.

In 1890, 13-year-old Pablo Casals found an old copy of these suites in a music shop in Barcelona, where he had gone with his father. It is said that he practiced them almost every day for about 12 years before finally playing them in public. His discovery led to the suites being played all over the world.
Bach's own score has never been found. Copies by Anna Magdalena and others survive, but marks such as slurs for the bow differ from copy to copy. So performers are still thinking about the 'right' way to play this music.
In 1989, just after the Berlin Wall fell, the Russian-born cellist Mstislav Rostropovich played his cello in front of the wall. The music he played came from these cello suites. The sound of a single cello marked a historic moment.
The world-famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma has recorded all six suites three times in his life. His playing changed as he grew older, from a young musician, through middle age, to a veteran. This music is so deep that musicians want to live with it for a lifetime.
