Georg Philipp Telemann was born on 14 March 1681 in Magdeburg, Germany. His father, a pastor, died when Telemann was four. From an early age he was crazy about music. Almost entirely self-taught, he learned to play several instruments and to compose, and he even wrote an opera in his early teens. But his mother did not want him to become a musician and took his instruments away.
In 1701 Telemann entered the University of Leipzig to study law. But his musical talent was soon noticed. He founded a student music society, the Collegium Musicum, and staged operas. He then worked for a count in Sorau near Poland, and in Eisenach and Frankfurt. He later wrote that the Polish folk music he heard in Sorau had inspired him greatly.
In 1721 Telemann became music director of five churches in the great port city of Hamburg, and he stayed there for the remaining 46 years of his life. He wrote church music, ran public concerts and an opera house, and even published and sold his own music. In 1722 he was chosen as cantor of St Thomas's in Leipzig, but he turned it down after Hamburg raised his salary. Bach got the job instead.
Telemann kept composing into his eighties and died in Hamburg on 25 June 1767, aged 86. His successor was his godson, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. In his lifetime he was the most famous composer in Germany, but in the 19th century his music was dismissed as 'too much and too light'. In the 20th century it was rediscovered, and today its bright, friendly style is loved again.

Telemann's mother did not think music was a proper career, so she took away her son's instruments. In his autobiography, Telemann says he kept on composing in secret. He went to university to study law partly to satisfy her wishes.
In 1722, Leipzig's first choice for cantor of St Thomas's was Telemann. When he declined, and the next candidate, Graupner, could not leave his post, the job went to Bach. One councillor is recorded as saying that since the best man could not be had, they would have to accept a mediocre one. But this was said in a debate about the whole job, including school teaching, not only about music.
In later life Telemann loved growing flowers. His friend Handel knew about his passion for rare plants, and letters show that Handel sent him rare plants from England. It was a charming friendship between two great masters.
Telemann engraved and published his own music, selling it by subscription. The list of subscribers for his Tafelmusik (1733) includes people from all over Europe — among them Handel. For a composer to manage his own sales like this was very new at the time.
Telemann married twice. His first wife died young. With his second wife, Maria Catharina, he had nine children. But she ran up huge gambling debts and later left him. It is said that Telemann paid off the debts with help from his friends.
Telemann lived a very long life, outliving both Bach (died 1750) and Handel (died 1759). Even in old age he studied the latest musical fashions and kept composing into his eighties. He can be seen as a bridge between the Baroque and the new age of composers like Mozart.
