Telemann's Trumpet Concerto in D major is written for solo trumpet, strings and basso continuo. It has four movements, Adagio, Allegro, Grave and Allegro, in the order slow, fast, slow, fast. It is striking that in the first movement the trumpet, which usually plays lively fanfares, begins by singing long, smooth notes.
Trumpets in those days had no valves. Players could only use a limited set of notes, chosen by how they used their lips. To play a melody, they had to play very high, where the available notes are close together. This high, brilliant way of playing was called 'clarino', and in the old score of this piece the solo part is labeled 'Clarino'.
We do not know exactly when it was written, but a handwritten copy survives in Darmstadt, Germany. In the Baroque era, the trumpet was closely linked with royal courts, armies and celebrations. Today it is often played on the small piccolo trumpet with valves, and it is an important piece for trumpet players.
About 300 years ago, trumpets had no buttons. Players changed the notes with their lips only. That was very hard! In this concerto, the trumpet plays high and bright notes. It sounds like a party for a king.

The Baroque trumpet was a simple instrument, just a long tube wound into shape. With no valves for the fingers, players chose notes using only their lips and breath. Brass instruments with valves did not appear until the 19th century. The great players of that time had true craftsmen's skills.
In 17th- and 18th-century Germany, court and army trumpeters formed a guild and strictly protected their skills. The trumpet was not something anyone could play as they liked. It was a special instrument that showed the power of kings and nobles.
The score of this concerto is not in Telemann's own hand. A copy from his time survives in Darmstadt, Germany. Christoph Graupner, the court music director in Darmstadt, was a friend of Telemann, and many copies of Telemann's works were kept there.
In Hamburg, Telemann was in charge of the music at the city's five main churches. He also directed the opera house and even published his own music. On top of that, he wrote huge numbers of concertos and chamber works. It is a mystery where he found the time.
