Water Music is a set of orchestral pieces by Handel, now arranged into three suites. Grand pieces with horns and trumpets alternate with light dances. Because it was written to be played outdoors, on a river, it has a bright, strong sound that carries far.
On the evening of July 17, 1717, King George I of Britain enjoyed a boat trip on the River Thames in London. On a barge close by, about 50 musicians played Handel's new music. According to newspapers and reports of the time, the king loved it so much that he had the music, about an hour long, played three times.
The event was organized by Baron Kielmansegg, a close friend of the king. Later a story spread that Handel wrote this music to make peace with the king, but it is thought to be a legend that grew up afterwards. Today the three suites are named by their keys: F major, D major and G major.

Handel had once worked in Hanover, Germany, for the future George I, but he went to London on leave and stayed far longer than planned. Later, George became King of Britain. A biography from 1760 spread the story that Handel won back the king's favor with Water Music, but it is thought not to be true.
According to a report by a Prussian diplomat, the king liked the music so much that he had it played three times, before and after supper, even though it lasted about an hour. That means the musicians kept playing on the river until late at night.
The 'Alla Hornpipe' in the D major suite is one of the most famous pieces in Water Music. The hornpipe was a lively dance loved in Britain. Trumpets and horns call to each other brightly, creating a festive mood.
The complete Water Music was not published until around 1788, about 70 years after the river concert. Until then, only some pieces were printed, and the rest survived in handwritten copies. Because of this, editions still differ on which pieces to play and in what order.
