Telemann's Viola Concerto in G major is written for solo viola, strings and basso continuo. The viola is a little larger than the violin and has a soft, warm sound. In the orchestra it usually plays a supporting part in the middle of the harmony, but in this concerto it proudly takes the lead. It is said to be the oldest known viola concerto.
It was probably written between about 1716 and 1721, when Telemann was working in Frankfurt. It has four movements, slow, fast, slow, fast, following the 'church sonata' form of the time. The Largo sings calmly, the Allegro is lively, the Andante in E minor is a little shadowy, and the Presto ends the piece with energy.
Telemann was a very productive composer who is said to have written more than 3,000 works. In his lifetime he was more famous than Bach and popular all over Europe. Today, this concerto is a standard piece studied by many viola students, and it is an important piece for showing the charm of the viola.
The viola is a little bigger than the violin. Its sound is soft and warm. In most music, the viola is not the star. But in this concerto, it is the star! It may be the oldest viola concerto we know.

Guinness World Records lists Telemann as the most prolific composer. He is said to have written more than 3,000 works, and about half of them are thought to be lost. He wrote all this while also doing his jobs at churches and theaters. Amazing!
Telemann loved music from childhood, but his family did not want him to become a musician. He wrote in his own autobiography that they took his instruments away. Still, he kept making music in secret and taught himself composition almost entirely on his own.
In 1722, when Leipzig was choosing a new cantor (music director) for St Thomas Church, Telemann was chosen first. But he decided to stay in Hamburg and turned it down. The next choice, Christoph Graupner, was not allowed to leave his employer. Then, in 1723, Bach got the job. At the time, Telemann had the bigger reputation.
In the orchestra world, there are so many 'viola jokes' that tease the quiet viola. That is why this concerto, where the viola shines as the star, is so special for violists. Telemann also wrote concertos for many other instruments.
