Life Story

Clarke was probably born in London around 1674. Little is known about his exact birthday or his family. As a boy, he sang in the choir of the Chapel Royal and studied music with the composer John Blow, who had also taught Henry Purcell. So Clarke followed in Purcell's footsteps, a little later.

In 1692, Clarke became organist at Winchester College. He then returned to London, where he trained the choirboys at St. Paul's Cathedral, and from 1699 he was also its organist. At that time, the cathedral was being rebuilt after the Great Fire of London in 1666. In 1704 he was also chosen as an organist of the Chapel Royal.

Clarke wrote anthems for church, harpsichord pieces, and music for the theater. Around 1700, he composed The Prince of Denmark's March for Prince George of Denmark, the husband of the future Queen Anne. Its bright, noble tune later became famous around the world as the Trumpet Voluntary.

But in December 1707, Clarke died in his early thirties. It is said that he took his own life because of a hopeless love for a woman of higher rank. Afterward his name was forgotten, and from the late 1800s his most famous piece was wrongly credited to Purcell for many years. Today it is known as Clarke's, and it is played at weddings and graduations all over the world.

Clarke was probably born in London. He sang in a royal choir as a boy. Later, he played the organ at St. Paul's Cathedral. He wrote a happy march for a prince. Today, people play it at weddings. For many years, people thought another man wrote it.

Around 1878, the Trumpet Voluntary was published as a work by Purcell. Conductor Henry Wood's arrangement and recordings spread it widely, and until the 1940s most people believed it was Purcell's. Only later did research show that Clarke was the real composer.

Another favorite, the Trumpet Tune in D, was also thought to be by Purcell. It comes from The Island Princess, a stage work Clarke created together with Daniel Purcell, Henry Purcell's brother. Working together probably caused the mix-up.

In 1981, the Trumpet Voluntary was played at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer at St. Paul's Cathedral. Clarke's music was broadcast around the world from the very cathedral where he had been organist.

When Purcell died in 1695, Clarke wrote an Ode on the Death of Henry Purcell. He could never have imagined that his own music would later become famous under Purcell's name.
