The Story

French composer Erik Satie wrote this piece in 1888, when he was about 22. It is the first of his three Gymnopédies. Over a gently swaying accompaniment, a lonely melody flows quietly. There is no big climax and it uses only simple sounds, yet once you hear it, you never forget it.

The title is thought to come from the name of a festival in ancient Sparta, Greece, where boys and young men sang and danced in groups. Around the time Satie played piano at Le Chat Noir ('The Black Cat'), a cabaret in the Montmartre area of Paris, he was creating this very personal kind of music.

In 1896–97, Satie's friend Debussy arranged two of the Gymnopédies for orchestra, which helped make them better known. Today the piece is often heard in films, on TV, and in commercials, and it is loved all over the world as music for relaxing and healing. It may be far more famous today than it was in Satie's own lifetime.

This is a slow and quiet piano piece. Satie wrote it when he was about 22. The music is very simple, but it is very beautiful. Many people listen to it to relax. Satie was a very unusual man.

Surprising Facts

The 'gymno-' in Gymnopédie comes from an ancient Greek word meaning 'naked.' In ancient Greece, athletes trained without clothes, so the English words 'gymnasium' and 'gym' come from the same root. Who knew a quiet piano piece was related to the gym?

Satie owned several identical velvet suits and wore them almost every day, so he was called 'the Velvet Gentleman.' Later, it is said, he walked around Paris in a bowler hat with an umbrella.

After Satie died, his friends entered his room for the first time. It is said they found two pianos stacked on top of each other, many umbrellas, and piles of unopened letters. For years, he had let no one inside.

Debussy orchestrated Satie's Gymnopédies No. 1 and No. 3. But in Debussy's published version, Satie's No. 3 is called 'No. 1,' and No. 1 is called 'No. 3.' That makes the numbers a little confusing!
