The Goldberg Variations is a large keyboard work of 32 pieces: a slow Aria, thirty variations, and the Aria again at the end. These variations do not simply decorate the melody. Instead, Bach uses the Aria's bass line and chords as a foundation and builds a completely different piece each time.
It was published around 1741 for a harpsichord with two keyboards. Every third variation is a canon, where one melody follows another a little later, and the distance in pitch between the two grows by one step each time. In the last variation, number 30, Bach combines two popular folk songs of the day, ending with a playful smile.
The name 'Goldberg' comes from a story in a biography of Bach published in 1802. It says that the harpsichordist Goldberg played this music for Count Keyserlingk, who could not sleep. In the 20th century, the Canadian pianist Glenn Gould recorded it in 1955, and his hugely successful record brought the work to a much wider audience.
This is a long piece for a keyboard. It starts with a slow song, the aria. Then come 30 different variations. At the end, the aria comes back. A famous story says Bach wrote it for a man who could not sleep.

The story of the count and Goldberg comes from a biography written more than 50 years after Bach died. The printed score has no dedication to the count, and Goldberg was only a boy of about 14 at the time. So many scholars think the story may not be true.
According to the same biography, the count was so pleased that he gave Bach a golden goblet filled with 100 gold coins. If true, it would be an amazing reward for a single work. However, no records from the time have been found to prove it.
In 1974, Bach's own copy of the printed Goldberg Variations was found in Strasbourg, France. In it, Bach had written 14 extra canons based on the first eight bass notes of the Aria. It was the discovery of music that had been unknown for more than 200 years.
Glenn Gould made his debut record with this work in 1955. He had a habit of humming while he played, and you can hear his voice on the recordings. He recorded it again in 1981 and died in 1982, just after the new record came out. The work connected the beginning and end of his career.
