Air on the G String' is the Air, the second movement of Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3. The suite is a lively work with trumpets and timpani, but this movement is played only by strings and continuo, the bass accompaniment. Above, a slow melody sings in long notes. Below, the bass moves step by step, as if it were walking.
The suite probably dates from Bach's years in Leipzig, around 1730, but we do not know when or where it was first performed. At that time Bach led the Collegium Musicum, a music society that gave concerts in a coffee house, and the suite may have been played there. 'Air' means 'song.' It is a piece for instruments, but the melody flows like a singer's long breath.
The name 'Air on the G String' comes from an arrangement made in 1871 by the German violinist August Wilhelmj. He moved the piece into C major so that it could be played on the violin's lowest string, the G string, alone. His version became very popular, and today the music is loved in many styles, from jazz to pop.
This is a slow and beautiful piece. Bach wrote it for strings around 1730. Later, a violinist changed it. He played the whole melody on one string, the G string! So people call it 'Air on the G String.'

A violin has four strings, and the G string is the lowest and thickest. Wilhelmj changed the key so the whole melody could be played on the G string alone. The G string has a deep, warm sound, which makes the piece feel even gentler.
The French pianist Jacques Loussier became popular with 'Play Bach,' playing Bach as jazz. In Britain, his trio's version of the Air was used for many years in TV adverts for cigars, so the jazz version became widely known.
'A Whiter Shade of Pale,' released in 1967 by the British band Procol Harum, is said to be influenced by Bach. People often say that its slowly falling bass line is similar to the Air. But the song does not simply copy it.
The piece has two halves, and each one is repeated. The first half is only six bars, but the second half is twelve bars, twice as long. In the second half, the melody travels through different keys and grows higher and more expressive. There is a careful plan hidden inside this short piece.
