The six Cello Suites are works for one cello alone. Bach probably wrote them around 1720, while he was working at the court in Köthen. Suite No. 3 in C major is bright and bold, and it lets the cello's lowest string, C, ring out fully. Its movements are a Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, two Bourrées and a Gigue.
At the time, the cello usually supported ensembles by playing the bass line, although some solo cello music already existed. Bach gave a single cello both melody and harmony. C major is built around the same note as the cello's lowest open string, so the whole instrument resonates. In the second half of the Prelude, the low note G sounds again and again under moving notes, with power like a pipe organ.
No copy in Bach's own hand has been found, but copies made by his second wife, Anna Magdalena, and others have survived. In the 19th century, some editions presented the suites as teaching pieces. In the 20th century, the cellist Pablo Casals played them in concerts and recorded them, which did much to make them widely known as masterpieces. The Bourrée from Suite No. 3 is also a favorite that many young cellists practice.
This is happy music for one cello. The cello plays a very low C. It sounds big and warm. The Bourrée in this suite is a fun dance. Many young cello players learn it.

The Prelude begins by running down a scale from a high C, then leaping down through a chord to land on the cello's lowest C. It is like zooming down a two-octave slide. That low C is an open string, so the whole instrument vibrates.
Allemande, courante, sarabande, bourrée and gigue were all names of popular dances in Europe at the time. But this suite was probably written for listening and playing, not for real dancing. Even so, the rhythm of each dance comes alive on a single cello.
The bourrée is said to come from a bouncy country dance in two beats from France. In Suite No. 3, Bourrée I is cheerful and in C major, while Bourrée II is a little shadowy, in C minor. The custom was to play the two in turn, then go back and play Bourrée I again.
In the later suites, new challenges appear. In No. 5, the highest string is tuned one step lower, and No. 6 was written for an instrument with five strings. Among them, No. 3 is a bright, friendly suite that rings out freely on an ordinary cello.
