Chopin wrote this polonaise around 1838 and published it in 1840. It is the first of the two pieces in Op. 40. Bright chords in A major ring out like trumpets and drums. Because it sounds so bold, people began to call it the "Military" Polonaise, but Chopin did not give it this name.
Op. 40 was dedicated to Julian Fontana, a close friend who copied Chopin's music and helped him with publishers. The second polonaise of the set, in C minor, is dark and heavy. The pianist Anton Rubinstein is said to have called the first one a picture of Poland's glory, and the second a picture of Poland's tragedy.
This piece became very special to Polish people. During the siege of Warsaw in 1939, Polish Radio broadcast its opening phrase again and again as a signal that the capital was still fighting. Today the piece is still loved as a symbol of Polish national pride.
This piano piece sounds like a march. The chords are loud and bright, like trumpets. People call it the Military Polonaise. In 1939, Polish Radio used its first notes again and again as a signal. The notes gave people hope.

In September 1939, as German forces surrounded Warsaw, Polish Radio broadcast the opening phrase of this polonaise again and again as a signal. An American magazine of the time reported that the eleven notes sounded every thirty seconds to show that the capital was still holding out.
The composer Robert Schumann once described Chopin's music as "cannons buried in flowers." He meant that under the beauty lay the strong spirit of Poland, which refused to give in to Russian rule. This polonaise fits those words perfectly.
Op. 40 is a pair: one bright piece in A major and one dark piece in C minor. The pianist Rubinstein is said to have compared them to Poland's glory and Poland's tragedy. If you listen to both, you can hear the light and the shadow.
Op. 40 was dedicated to his friend Julian Fontana. Fontana made clean copies of Chopin's music and dealt with publishers for him. After Chopin's death, he also worked hard to publish the music Chopin left behind.
