The Story

Ballade No. 4 is the last of Chopin's four ballades. It is often called one of his greatest masterpieces, full of deep sadness and passion. For pianists, it is like a great mountain that tests both skill and heart. It was the last of the four to be written, when Chopin was in his early thirties, at the height of his powers.

In 1842, Chopin worked on this piece while staying at George Sand's country house in Nohant, and it was finished by the end of that year. It begins with a short, quiet and mysterious introduction, and then a sad melody appears. This melody returns again and again, and each time its decorations and accompaniment change, so it grows richer and richer.

It was published in 1843 and dedicated to Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild, one of Chopin's piano students. The final section is a whirlwind of fast, furious notes that rushes to the end. Many pianists still dream of playing it one day.

This is a long piano piece. It tells a sad and deep story. A sad song comes back many times. Each time, it changes a little. The ending is very fast and very hard to play.

This piece was dedicated to Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild, from one of the richest families in Europe. Chopin earned his living by teaching piano to high society in Paris, and she was one of his students.

There is a story that soon after arriving in Paris, Chopin played at a Rothschild evening party, became a sensation, and suddenly gained many rich students. The details are not confirmed, but his link with the Rothschild family was real.

Each time the sad melody returns, new decorations and accompaniments are added, so it grows almost like a set of variations. It is like a storyteller telling the same tale again and again in slightly different words.

The final section, with both hands racing wildly, is very difficult. It is often regarded as one of the hardest passages in Chopin's music, so pianists must control both speed and clarity.
