Mendelssohn was born in 1809 in Hamburg, Germany, into the family of a wealthy banker. His grandfather was the famous philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. The family soon moved to Berlin, where Felix and his older sister Fanny studied music with excellent teachers. At twelve he met the great poet Goethe. At sixteen he wrote the String Octet, and at seventeen the overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream, two masterpieces still played today.
In 1829, at the age of twenty, Mendelssohn conducted Bach's St Matthew Passion in Berlin. The great work had rarely been heard in public since Bach's death, and this performance sparked a wide new interest in Bach's music. That same year he traveled to Scotland, and its scenery inspired The Hebrides overture, also called Fingal's Cave, and his Scottish Symphony. A trip to Italy gave the world his sunny Italian Symphony.
From 1835 he led the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig and turned the city into one of Europe's musical capitals. In 1843 he founded the Leipzig Conservatory and put great energy into training young musicians. In 1837 he married Cécile Jeanrenaud, and they had five children. He was often invited to Britain, where Queen Victoria and Prince Albert treated him as a dear friend.
In 1844 he completed his much-loved Violin Concerto in E minor, and in 1846 his oratorio Elijah had its premiere in England. But in May 1847 his beloved sister Fanny died suddenly. Deeply saddened, Mendelssohn soon fell ill himself. After several strokes, he died in Leipzig that November at only 38. Later, under the Nazis, his music was banned because he came from a Jewish family.
Mendelssohn was born in Germany in 1809. His family was rich. He wrote great music as a teenager. He loved his sister Fanny very much. He wrote the famous Wedding March. He died young, at 38.

In 1842, at Buckingham Palace, Queen Victoria sang him the song 'Italien', which had been published under Felix's name. In fact, it had been written by his sister Fanny. In those days it was hard for women to publish music under their own names, and Felix honestly confessed the truth to the queen.
In 1858, when Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Princess Victoria, married a Prussian prince, Mendelssohn's Wedding March was played at the ceremony. This is said to be how it spread around the world as the music for leaving the church after a wedding.
The opening tune of The Hebrides overture was jotted down in a letter to his family during the Scottish trip itself. Yet his travel companion Karl Klingemann wrote that Felix was terribly seasick on the boat to Staffa, the island with the famous cave.
In 1821 his teacher took twelve-year-old Felix to visit Goethe in Weimar, where he stayed for about two weeks and played the piano. Goethe, then over seventy, was amazed by the boy's talent and invited him back again and again.
Mendelssohn made many sketches and watercolors during his travels. His paintings of Swiss and British landscapes are still kept carefully in museums and libraries. He was good at almost everything, from music to painting and languages.
A statue of Mendelssohn once stood in front of the Gewandhaus concert hall in Leipzig. But in 1936 the Nazis had it torn down. Many years later, in 2008, a new statue of him was set up in Leipzig again.
FAMOUS WORDS
“The thoughts which are expressed to me by music that I love are not too indefinite to be put into words, but on the contrary, too definite.”
