Mendelssohn based this symphony on his impressions of a trip to Scotland. It moves from a dim, misty opening to stormy passages, a lively dance, and a powerful ending. Its four movements are played without breaks. Throughout, you can feel the mist, wind and sea of a northern land.
In the summer of 1829, the 20-year-old Mendelssohn visited Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, a place linked to Mary, Queen of Scots. There he saw the roofless ruins of a chapel. In a letter to his family, he wrote that he had found the beginning of his Scottish Symphony in that old chapel, and he jotted down the opening tune.
But the work went slowly, and he did not finish it until 1842, thirteen years later. It was premiered in Leipzig that March and later dedicated to Queen Victoria. Though it is called No. 3, it was the last symphony Mendelssohn completed. The numbers do not match the order in which they were written.
Mendelssohn visited Scotland when he was 20. He saw an old broken chapel. He wrote down a tune there. But he finished this symphony 13 years later! The music sounds like mist, wind and the sea.

On July 30, 1829, Mendelssohn wrote home from Edinburgh about the roofless chapel at Holyrood Palace, linked to Mary, Queen of Scots. He wrote that he believed he had found the beginning of his Scottish Symphony there, and added a few bars of music.
In 1842, Mendelssohn met Queen Victoria and Prince Albert at Buckingham Palace. When the queen sang his song Italien, he confessed it had actually been written by his sister Fanny, as he described in a letter. In those days it was hard for women to publish under their own names.
Mendelssohn asked that the four movements be played without pauses. He probably wanted listeners to hear it as one big story, without applause breaking the flow. That was a fresh idea at the time.
The numbers follow the order of publication, so No. 3 is actually the last symphony Mendelssohn completed. The Italian Symphony, No. 4, was written and performed earlier.
