This is the most famous piece in Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words, a collection of piano pieces. A song without words is exactly what it sounds like: the right hand sings the melody like a singer, while the other notes accompany it softly, like a harp. It is short and popular with piano students.
Mendelssohn wrote Songs Without Words throughout his life: 48 pieces in eight books. Six books came out in his lifetime and two after his death. This piece was written in 1842 and is the last piece in Book 5, published in 1844. The collections were hugely popular with people who played the piano at home.
Mendelssohn himself wrote the title Spring Song on a manuscript of this piece, but the title was not printed in the published edition. Many other titles in Songs Without Words were added later by publishers and others. Still, this bright, bouncing piece has become a favorite symbol of spring and is often played at piano recitals.
This piano piece is a song with no words. The right hand sings like a singer. The music feels light, like a spring day. Mendelssohn wrote the name Spring Song on his own copy. But the name was not on the printed music.

In 1842, Mendelssohn wrote to a man who asked about the meaning of his Songs Without Words. He said that the thoughts expressed by music he loves are not too vague for words, but too precise. It shows why he was careful about explaining music in words.
Of the 48 Songs Without Words, only a few, such as the Venetian Gondola Songs, were printed with Mendelssohn's own titles. Spring Song is a title he wrote on a manuscript, but many others, like Hunting Song and Spinning Song, were added later by publishers and others, and they stuck.
Mendelssohn's sister Fanny was also a fine composer and wrote many song-like piano pieces. The two were very close and shared opinions on each other's music. Some scholars think Fanny played an important part in shaping this kind of piece.
In the 19th century, pianos spread into middle-class homes, and people wanted beautiful short pieces to play. Songs Without Words fit perfectly and sold well across Europe. It was one of the hits that made Mendelssohn's name widely known.
