Life Story

Schubert was born in 1797 on the edge of Vienna, the son of a schoolteacher. He learned the violin from his father and the piano from his older brother, and he soon amazed his teachers. At eleven, he was chosen for the boys' choir of the Imperial Court Chapel and studied at a boarding school. There he took composition lessons from none other than Antonio Salieri and played in the school orchestra.

After school, Schubert worked as an assistant teacher at his father's school and kept composing. At seventeen he wrote "Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel" to a poem by Goethe, and at eighteen he wrote "The Erl-King." These songs for voice and piano changed the art song forever. In 1815 alone, he wrote about 140 songs. He wrote more than 600 in his life, and he is called the King of Song.

He later gave up teaching to work as a freelance composer, but money was always tight. Still, his friends, poets and painters among them, supported him and often held gatherings called Schubertiades to enjoy his music. Masterpieces such as the Trout Quintet, the song cycle Winterreise, and the Unfinished Symphony grew out of these days with friends.

Schubert deeply admired Beethoven and carried a torch at his funeral in 1827. In 1828 he gave the only public concert in his lifetime devoted entirely to his own works, and it was a success. But that November he died of an illness, recorded as typhoid fever, at only 31. As he wished, he was buried near Beethoven, and today the two rest side by side in Vienna's Central Cemetery.

Schubert was short and a little chubby, so his friends called him "Schwammerl," a Viennese word meaning "little mushroom." It was a cute nickname full of affection.

Schubert was very nearsighted and always wore round glasses. There is a story that he slept with them on so he could start composing as soon as he woke up. It comes from friends' memories, so no one knows if it is true, but it shows how much he loved to write music.

In 1816, a friend sent Schubert's settings of Goethe's poems, including "The Erl-King," to the great poet himself. But Goethe never replied, and the music was simply sent back. Today, "The Erl-King" is one of the most famous songs ever set to Goethe's words.

Schubert wrote the Unfinished Symphony in 1822, but the score stayed with his friend Anselm Hüttenbrenner. It was not performed until 1865, 37 years after Schubert's death. Why he stopped after two movements is still a mystery.

In 1839, Robert Schumann visited Schubert's brother Ferdinand in Vienna and found the score of a large symphony that had been put away. It was the Great C major Symphony. Schumann told his friend Mendelssohn, who premiered it in Leipzig that same year.

Salieri is often seen as a villain because of the film Amadeus, but he was actually a fine teacher. As a boy, Schubert studied composition with Salieri, the court music director in Vienna. Salieri also taught Beethoven and Liszt.
