In 1823, Schubert wrote music for a play called "Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus" by Helmina von Chézy. The set has about ten numbers, including entr'actes played between the acts, ballet music and songs for voice and chorus. The best known are the gentle Entr'acte No. 3 and Ballet Music No. 2.
The play opened in December 1823 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. However, the script was considered weak, and the play closed after only two performances. At the premiere, the overture was actually borrowed from Schubert's opera "Alfonso und Estrella." The music itself is said to have received warm applause.
Afterward, many of the orchestral parts sat unused for a long time. In 1867, George Grove and the composer Arthur Sullivan traveled from England to Vienna to look for Schubert's music, and they are said to have found the Rosamunde parts there. The play is forgotten today, but the music lives on as a concert favorite.
This music was for a play. The play was not a success, and it closed after two nights. But people liked the music. People say two men from England later found the old music in Vienna. Now people love it in concerts.

The piece we now call the "Rosamunde Overture" was first written in 1820 for another play, "The Magic Harp." A different opera overture was used at the Rosamunde premiere, but later "The Magic Harp" overture became known under the Rosamunde name.
Schubert seems to have loved the gentle melody of Entr'acte No. 3. He used a very similar tune in the second movement of his String Quartet No. 13 in 1824, and again in a piano impromptu (Op. 142 No. 3) in 1827. That is why the quartet is called "Rosamunde."
Chézy, who wrote the play, also wrote the libretto for Weber's opera "Euryanthe." But the story of "Rosamunde" was not popular, and it closed after just two performances. Only the music survived, and it became far more famous than the play it was written for.
According to Grove's memories, he and Sullivan were so excited by the find that they copied the music until about two in the morning. Sullivan later became a very popular composer of comic operas such as "The Mikado."
