The Story

Schubert wrote this sonata for the arpeggione and piano in November 1824. It has three movements and begins with a sad melody in A minor. Today the original instrument is almost never used, and the piece is usually played on the cello or viola. It is an important part of the cello repertoire.

The arpeggione was a new instrument made in the early 1820s by Stauffer, an instrument maker in Vienna. It had six strings and frets like a guitar, but it was played with a bow like a cello. The sonata is thought to have been written for Schuster, a skilled player of the instrument.

However, the arpeggione soon lost its popularity and was forgotten. The sonata was not published until 1871, more than forty years after Schubert's death. By then the instrument had almost disappeared, so the music came to be played on other instruments, such as the cello and viola.

The arpeggione was a new instrument in 1824. It had six strings and frets, like a guitar. But people played it with a bow, like a cello. Schubert wrote this sonata for it. Today, cello players often play this music.

The arpeggione was also called a "guitar-cello." Its six strings were tuned like a guitar's, but you held it between your knees and played it with a bow, like a cello. It was a slightly greedy idea: the best of the guitar and the cello in one instrument.

This sonata is almost the only piece written for the arpeggione that is still widely played. If Schubert had not written it, hardly anyone today would know the name "arpeggione."

Because the original instrument is very rare today, the sonata is played on the cello and viola, and also on the double bass, flute, guitar and more. Even the first edition in 1871 came with parts for violin or cello.

The sonata is thought to have been written for Vincenz Schuster, a master of the arpeggione. Schuster even published a method book for the instrument. However, no record has been found that he officially asked Schubert to write it.
