The Story

Schubert wrote this piano sonata in 1825, when he was 28. It is in A minor and has four movements. It begins with a quiet melody played by both hands together, like a question, and strong chords answer it. It is one of Schubert's largest and grandest sonatas.

That summer, Schubert went on a long trip through Upper Austria with his friend, the singer Johann Michael Vogl. In a letter to his parents, he wrote that when he played the second movement, a set of variations, people told him the keys became singing voices under his hands. The trip became a happy memory for him.

The sonata was published in 1826 and dedicated to Archduke Rudolph, who was known as Beethoven's patron. It was the first of Schubert's piano sonatas to be published in his lifetime. Its title page called it the First Grand Sonata.
