The Story

The Trout" is a song Schubert wrote in 1817, when he was 20. The piano part sparkles and ripples, painting a trout swimming happily in a clear stream. The words are by the German poet Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart. Schubert copied the song out several times, and a number of slightly different versions survive.

In the song, the singer watches a trout from the riverbank. As long as the water is clear, the fisherman cannot catch the fish. But the clever fisherman stirs up the mud, making the water cloudy, and catches the trout. The original poem had a final verse warning young girls not to be fooled, but Schubert left it out.

In 1819, in the Austrian town of Steyr, Schubert met Sylvester Paumgartner, a music lover who played the cello. He loved this song, and at his request Schubert wrote a piano quintet that includes a set of variations on the trout melody. This quintet is also known as the "Trout" and is one of the most popular pieces of chamber music.

This song is about a little fish in a river. The fish swims fast in clear water. A fisherman wants to catch it. He makes the water muddy. Then he catches the fish!

A copy of "The Trout" that Schubert wrote out for his friend Hüttenbrenner in 1818 has a big ink blot on it. The story goes that, half asleep, he poured ink on the page instead of the sand used to dry ink.

Schubart's original poem ended with a verse warning young girls to watch out for men like the fisherman. Schubert left this moral out and made the song simply about the trout's fate.

The poet Schubart was kept in prison for about ten years, partly for writing against his ruler. The trout poem is said to come from around that time, and some think he saw himself in the captured fish.

Unlike the usual piano quintet, the "Trout" Quintet uses violin, viola, cello and double bass. With the double bass holding the low notes, the piano is free to sing up high. The quintet was published only after Schubert's death.
