The Story

Schubert finished this chamber work in the autumn of 1828, the year he died at 31. It is written for five players, two violins, one viola and two cellos, and lasts about fifty minutes. Many call it his greatest piece of chamber music, and its slow second movement has long been praised as almost unearthly in its beauty.

Mozart's string quintets usually used two violas, but Schubert chose two cellos instead. This gives the low notes a rich sound and lets one cello sing melodies. In the second movement, a stormy middle section bursts into the calm music, and then the stillness returns.

In October 1828, Schubert described this work in a letter to the publisher Probst, but no deal was made. He died on November 19. The quintet was first performed in public in 1850 and published in 1853. It is thought that the composer never heard it played.

This music is for five string players. There are two cellos, not one. Schubert finished it about two months before he died. He probably never heard it played. The slow part is very quiet and beautiful.

Schubert died only about two months after finishing this work. Its first public performance came 22 years later, in 1850. It is thought that he could only hear this masterpiece in his imagination.

At the very end, all five players strike D-flat with full force and then move down a half step to C. This sudden step gives you a jolt. The piece ends in bright C major, yet a shadow remains. It is a strange and very Schubert-like ending.

In 1828, Schubert wrote an amazing number of masterpieces: his last three piano sonatas, the songs later collected as "Swan Song," and this quintet. While fighting illness, he spent his last year like a great final burst of fireworks.

In the second movement, the three middle instruments play a slow, quiet melody in long chords. Above them, the first violin sings short phrases, and the second cello answers with plucked notes, called pizzicato. It is quiet conversation music, as if time has stopped.
