This is the second of the four Impromptus, Op. 90, that Schubert wrote in 1827. The right hand runs over the keys in triplets, three notes to each beat, like rolling marbles. It is a bright, light piece and very popular at piano recitals. It may sound like a finger exercise, but it is full of delicate song.
The piece has an A-B-A shape. After the light first section, the middle section turns to B minor and becomes a wild, fierce dance with strong accents. Then the bright first section returns. But in the closing bars, the fierce music appears once more, and the piece ends, surprisingly, in a minor key.
The first two pieces of Op. 90 were published by Haslinger in Vienna at the end of 1827. The title "Impromptu" is said to have been chosen by the publisher. The third and fourth pieces were not published until 1857, thirty years later. Today all four are loved by pianists around the world.
This is a piano piece by Schubert. The right hand runs up and down very fast. It sounds bright and happy. In the middle, it gets loud and strong. At the very end, the music turns dark.

The title says E-flat major, but the piece ends on a dark E-flat minor chord. It is very unusual for a major-key piece to end in a minor key. It is like someone who has been smiling and chatting suddenly showing a tear at the end.
"Impromptu" means a piece that feels free, as if it were made up on the spot. But Schubert's impromptus have carefully planned, solid forms. Even though the name says "impromptu," they were not made up on the spot.
Of the four pieces in Op. 90, only the first two, including this one, were published while Schubert was alive. The third and fourth had to wait until 1857, almost thirty years after his death.
In the first section, the right hand plays fast triplets with almost no rest. There are a huge number of notes, yet the music never sounds noisy. Instead, it flows like a little stream. This piece tests how smoothly and evenly a pianist can move their fingers.
