The Story

Schubert wrote this song in October 1814, when he was only 17. The words come from Goethe's play "Faust." A young woman named Gretchen sits at her spinning wheel, thinking about Faust, the man she loves, and her heart grows more and more troubled. Many people call this song the true beginning of the German art song, or Lied.

The pianist's right hand plays quick notes without rest, like a turning spinning wheel, while the left hand suggests the foot pressing the pedal. As Gretchen's feelings rise and she remembers his kiss, the piano suddenly stops. Then the wheel slowly and unsteadily begins to turn again.

The song was published in 1821 as his Op. 2. Schubert went on to write more than 600 songs in his life. It is still an important song for singers, and Liszt arranged it for solo piano. It is a landmark work in which the piano is not just an accompaniment, but a second storyteller.

A young woman sits at a spinning wheel. She thinks about the man she loves. The piano plays fast notes, like the wheel. Schubert wrote this song when he was only 17. At one point, the piano stops!

This song is believed to have been written on October 19, 1814, and some people call that day "the birthday of the German Lied." Its vivid way of making the piano and voice work together to create a drama felt very fresh, and it greatly influenced later songs.

At the climax, Gretchen sings, "And oh, his kiss!" At that moment, the sound of the spinning wheel, which has turned all along, suddenly breaks off. She is so lost in her memory that her hands stop. The piano alone shows what is happening in her heart.

When he wrote this song, Schubert was helping at his father's school as a teacher and also studying with the composer Salieri. In the same year, 1814, his first Mass was performed at a church in Vienna. While still a teenager, he was already composing like a master.

The song begins with the words "My peace is gone, my heart is heavy." Goethe's poem ends with much more passionate words, but Schubert repeats the opening line once more at the end. This makes it feel as if her troubles will never end.
