The Story

Schubert wrote this string quartet for two violins, viola and cello in 1824. In the second movement, he wrote variations on music from his own song "Death and the Maiden," composed seven years earlier, and that is how the quartet got its name. All four movements begin in minor keys, and the music is dark and intense.

The song sets a poem by Matthias Claudius. A frightened girl begs Death to go away, but Death answers gently that he is a friend and that she will sleep softly in his arms. At this time Schubert was seriously ill. In a letter of March 1824, he called himself the unhappiest and most wretched person in the world.

The quartet is said to have been first played in 1826 at a private gathering. It was not published in Schubert's lifetime and only appeared in print in 1831. Gustav Mahler later worked on an arrangement for string orchestra. Today it is loved as one of Schubert's greatest pieces of chamber music.

This music is for four string players. It is dark and very strong. The name comes from a song by the same composer. In the song, Death talks gently to a young girl. Schubert was very sick at that time.

In the song, the girl's frightened words are fast and restless, while Death's words come slowly over calm chords. The theme of the quartet's second movement is based on this quiet music of Death. Something scary is shown as peace and rest.

The finale races along without rest in the rhythm of a tarantella, a fast Italian dance. Some listeners feel it is like a "dance of death" with Death himself. The music stays thrilling right to the very last note.

The song "Death and the Maiden," written in 1817, lasts only two or three minutes. Seven years later, its quiet music became the heart of a big quartet that lasts nearly forty minutes.

In Ariel Dorfman's play "Death and the Maiden" and the 1994 film by Roman Polanski based on it, this quartet is an important key to the story. The title of music written about 200 years ago became the title of a modern drama.
