Donizetti was born in 1797 into a poor family in Bergamo, a town in northern Italy. He was able to study music thanks to a free music school started by the composer Simon Mayr. Mayr saw the boy's talent, trained him with care, and helped him go on to study in Bologna. Donizetti respected his teacher deeply for the rest of his life.
Donizetti was an amazingly fast writer. He composed about seventy operas, and Anna Bolena in 1830 made him one of the top names of his day. The comedy The Elixir of Love from 1832 and the tragedy Lucia di Lammermoor from 1835 are still performed all over the world. He is one of the leading composers of bel canto, a style that shows off beautiful singing.
His private life, however, was full of sorrow. His children with his wife Virginia, whom he married in 1828, all died as babies, and in 1837 Virginia herself died young. Even so, Donizetti kept composing. He took his work to Paris, where he presented masterpieces such as The Daughter of the Regiment and Don Pasquale. In 1842 he was also appointed composer to the imperial court in Vienna.
In the mid-1840s Donizetti became seriously ill, and both his mind and body grew weak. After a period in a care home near Paris, he was brought back to Bergamo in 1847, and he died there the following year at the age of 50. His fame faded for a while, but in the mid-twentieth century great singers such as Maria Callas brought his operas back into the spotlight.
Donizetti was born in Italy in 1797. His family was poor. A kind teacher helped him study music. He wrote about 70 operas! He wrote music very fast. People still love his opera Lucia today.

His older brother Giuseppe Donizetti was invited to Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire, in 1828 to lead the sultan's military band. He is known for bringing Western-style military music to Turkey and was even called 'Donizetti Pasha'. Both brothers made careers far beyond their hometown.
For the famous mad scene in Lucia, Donizetti first wrote the accompaniment for the glass harmonica, an instrument played by touching spinning glass bowls with wet fingers. Its strange, unearthly sound was meant to show Lucia's troubled mind. But before the premiere, the part was rewritten for flute, and it is still usually played on the flute.
In the 1997 science fiction film The Fifth Element, a blue-skinned alien opera singer performs music from the mad scene of Lucia di Lammermoor. Halfway through, it turns into modern dance music, and the scene made a strong impression even on people who knew nothing about opera.
In Gustave Flaubert's French novel Madame Bovary, the heroine Emma goes to a theater in Rouen to see Lucia di Lammermoor. The scene shows how popular and familiar this opera was to people in the nineteenth century.
Father Mattei, who taught Donizetti in Bologna, had also been Rossini's teacher. In 1842 Rossini asked Donizetti to conduct a performance of his Stabat Mater in Bologna. It shows how much the older master trusted him.
