The Story

This is the last of the four Impromptus, Op. 90, that Schubert wrote in 1827. The right hand plays arpeggios, chords broken into single notes, that pour down from high to low again and again, creating a sound like sparkling drops of water. Many piano students dream of playing it.

The title says A-flat major, but the piece begins with a slightly shadowy sound in A-flat minor and gradually moves into the bright major key. Under the sparkling notes, the left hand sings a calm melody. The middle section turns to C-sharp minor, with a heartfelt song, before the sparkling first section returns.

This piece was not published in Schubert's lifetime. It appeared in 1857, almost thirty years after his death. Since then, many pianists have played and recorded it, and it has become a favorite at recitals. It tests both flowing finger work and the skill to make a melody sing.

This piano piece sounds like sparkling water. The right hand plays many quick notes from high to low. The left hand sings a soft melody. The middle part is sad. Then the sparkling music comes back.

The title says A-flat major, but the piece starts in A-flat minor. Light slowly shines into the dark colors until the music reaches the bright major key. It is the opposite of Op. 90 No. 2, which starts in major and ends in minor.

The sparkling right hand catches your ear first, but if you listen closely, the left hand is singing a calm melody. The pianist must keep the right hand light while making the left-hand song stand out. Balancing the two is one of the main challenges of the piece.

When this piece was published in 1857, it came out with No. 3. That piece was written in G-flat major, but the publisher changed it to G major to make it easier to play. This No. 4 was published in its original key and is still loved in that sound.

1827, the year Op. 90 was written, was also the year Beethoven died. Schubert, who deeply respected him, walked beside the coffin carrying a torch at the funeral. Just one year later, Schubert himself died at the young age of 31.
