The Story

Schubert wrote this fantasy for solo piano in 1822, at the age of 25. A "fantasy" is a piece written freely, without a fixed form. Its four sections are played without a break and last about twenty minutes in total. It is one of the most brilliant and powerful of all his piano works.

The name comes from Schubert's 1816 song "Der Wanderer." In the slow second section, he writes variations on a melody from this song. The whole piece is also built from one rhythm, long-short-short, so the four sections grow like branches from a single seed.

The music was published in 1823. Later, the great pianist Franz Liszt fell in love with it and arranged it for piano and orchestra. Its way of using one theme in changing forms across a whole work is said to have influenced later music, such as Liszt's Piano Sonata in B minor.

This is a very hard piano piece. It has four parts, but there are no stops. One part uses a melody from a song. People say Schubert once got stuck when he played it for friends.

There is a story that Schubert once played this piece for friends, got stuck in the last section and cried, "Let the devil play this stuff!" No one knows for sure if it really happened, but the piece is certainly that difficult.

The song "Der Wanderer" is about a lonely traveler who cannot find peace anywhere. Schubert placed part of this quiet, dark song at the center of a brilliant piano work. It is like building a great house from one small song.

The music was dedicated to Liebenberg, a wealthy nobleman who played the piano. Some say he also asked Schubert to write it. Schubert was often short of money, so this kind of request was probably an important source of income.

Liszt loved this piece and made a version for piano and orchestra in the early 1850s. With the orchestra adding color and power, it sounds almost like a piano concerto. It is fun to compare it with Schubert's original.
