即興曲 変ト長調 作品90-3

1857年の初版では、変ト長調（♭が6つ）がト長調（♯が1つ）に書きかえられました。アマチュアには♭が多すぎてむずかしいと出版社が考えたため、と言われています。でも実際は、変ト長調は手になじみやすい調だという意見もあります。

In the first edition of 1857, the key was changed from G-flat major, with six flats, to G major, with one sharp. It is said the publisher thought six flats would scare amateur players. Yet some pianists say G-flat actually fits the hand very comfortably.

シューベルトは1828年に31歳で亡くなりました。この第3曲が世に出たのは1857年で、亡くなってから30年近くもたっていました。シューベルトの作品には、このように死後に見つかったり出版されたりした名曲がとても多いのです。

Schubert died in 1828 at the age of 31. This impromptu was not published until 1857, almost 30 years after his death. Many of Schubert's masterpieces were found or published only after he died.

この曲が書かれた1827年、ベートーヴェンが亡くなりました。ウィーンで行われた大きな葬儀で、シューベルトはたいまつを持つ係の一人として参列しています。その翌年、シューベルト自身も世を去りました。

Beethoven died in 1827, the year this piece was written. At his large funeral in Vienna, Schubert was one of the torchbearers. Just one year later, Schubert himself died.

「即興曲」と聞くと、その場で思いつきでひいた曲のようですが、実際はていねいに書きこまれた作品です。メロディー・伴奏・低音の3つの層が、一つの手の中で同時に動くように作られていて、ピアニストには音のバランスが腕の見せどころです。

The word impromptu suggests music made up on the spot, but this piece is carefully composed. Melody, accompaniment and bass all move at the same time, sometimes within one hand. Balancing these layers is a real test for pianists.
