The Story

This is the second of the last three piano sonatas Schubert wrote in September 1828. It is a large work in four movements: a bright, grand first movement, a lonely song-like second movement, a light third movement, and a singing finale. It is a late masterpiece in which brightness and deep sadness live side by side.

Schubert was already ill, yet he worked on three big sonatas from around the spring of 1828 and finished them in September. The second movement begins like a quiet boat song, but in the middle it breaks into wild, almost chaotic music. The theme of the finale comes from a sonata he had written eleven years earlier.

Schubert died in November 1828, at 31, before he could publish the sonata. The three sonatas came out about ten years later, dedicated to Robert Schumann. For a long time they were seldom played, but in the 20th century they became known as masterpieces.

Schubert wrote this big piano sonata in 1828. He was sick at that time. Two months later, he died. The second part is quiet and sad. Then, in the middle, it suddenly becomes a wild storm!

Schubert is said to have planned to dedicate his last three sonatas to the pianist Hummel. But by the time they were published, Hummel had also died, so the publisher dedicated them to the young Robert Schumann, a great admirer of Schubert.

The gentle tune of the finale comes from the slow movement of his Sonata in A minor, D 537, written in 1817. Just before his death, he took an idea from his youth and made it grow into something much bigger.

The second movement rocks gently like a boat. But in the middle section, violent chords and racing notes make the music seem to fall apart. It is one of the boldest passages Schubert ever wrote, and pianists find it fascinating.

The last three sonatas, D 958, D 959 and D 960, are all large-scale works. Schubert probably began them around the spring of 1828 and, while his health was failing, finished all three in September. About two months later he died, aged 31.
