アヴェ・マリア（エレンの歌 第3番）

シューベルトの「アヴェ・マリア」は、1825年、28歳のころに作られた歌曲です。ゆったりと流れるピアノの伴奏の上で、聖母マリアへの祈りがやさしく歌われます。世界中で愛される祈りの歌ですが、正式な題名は「エレンの歌 第3番」。教会の礼拝のために書かれた宗教曲ではありませんでした。Schubert wrote his Ave Maria in 1825, when he was 28. Over a gently flowing piano part, a prayer to the Virgin Mary is sung softly. It is loved all over the world as a prayer song, but its real title is "Ellen's Third Song," and it was not written for church services.

もとになったのは、スコットランドの作家ウォルター・スコットの物語詩『湖上の美人』です。主人公の少女エレンは、追われる父とともに岩山の洞窟にかくれ、聖母マリアに守ってくださいと祈ります。シューベルトはそのドイツ語訳に曲をつけました。歌い出しの「アヴェ・マリア」という言葉から、この名前で親しまれるようになりました。The song comes from The Lady of the Lake, a long poem by the Scottish writer Walter Scott. In the story, a girl named Ellen hides in a cave with her father, who is being hunted, and she prays to Mary for protection. Schubert set a German translation of the poem. Because the song begins with the words "Ave Maria," it became known by that name.

Later, people began to sing the melody with the Latin words of the church prayer "Ave Maria," and today it is often sung at weddings and at Christmas.
