Schubert wrote this large symphony in C major around 1825 and 1826. A performance can last nearly an hour, which makes it the biggest of all his symphonies. Its nickname, "The Great," is said to come from the need to tell it apart from his smaller Symphony No. 6, which is also in C major.
The symphony opens quietly with two horns alone, and their melody grows and returns throughout the work. Schubert gave the score to the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna, but it was thought to be too long and too difficult. It was never given a proper concert performance in his lifetime. He died in 1828 at the age of 31.
During the winter of 1838–39, the composer Robert Schumann visited Vienna and found the score at the home of Schubert's brother Ferdinand. The symphony was first performed in Leipzig in March 1839, conducted by Felix Mendelssohn. Schumann praised its "heavenly length," and those words are still famous today.
This is a very long symphony. It can last almost one hour. It starts with two horns. Schubert never heard it played at a public concert. About ten years after his death, Schumann found the music.

In an article from 1840, Schumann praised the symphony's "heavenly length" and even compared it to a long novel in several volumes. Usually "long" sounds like a complaint, but he was praising how much rich music fills that length. The phrase became a famous way to describe Schubert's music.
Depending on the book or recording, this work is called No. 7, No. 8 or No. 9. The number changes because people count his unfinished and sketched symphonies in different ways. Recently, more scores and recordings call it No. 8.
In the 1840s, Mendelssohn tried to perform the symphony in London. It is said that the players burst out laughing at the finale, where the strings repeat the same rhythm again and again. For musicians of that time, the music was new, strange and very hard.
Some listeners point out that a melody in the finale sounds a little like the "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Schubert deeply respected Beethoven. It is fun to imagine that the melody is a quiet tribute to his hero.
